Maimunah appointed as Mayor of Kuala Lumpur August 15
KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today handed over the appointment letter to Datuk Seri Dr. Maimunah Mohd Sharif, who will begin her duties as the new Mayor of Kuala Lumpur (KL) starting 15 August.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), Dr. Zaliha Mustafa, announced that the appointment had received the approval of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim, in accordance with Subsection 4(2) of the Federal Capital Act 1960.
“I believe that with this appointment, she will be able to continue her extensive experience and contributions in leading the Kuala Lumpur City Hall with integrity. This is to ensure the sustainability of development, excellence, and continued prosperity towards a progressive and thriving Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur,” she said in the statement.
Meanwhile, Dr. Zaliha expressed her appreciation and gratitude to Datuk Seri Kamarulzaman Mat Salleh for his contributions and leadership during his tenure as the Mayor of Kuala Lumpur.
Maimunah, 63, previously served as the Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat). She was appointed in January 2018, becoming the first Asian woman to hold the position of Executive Director of UN-Habitat.

Maimunah holds a Bachelor of Science (Urban Planning) from the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology, United Kingdom, before pursuing a Master of Science (Urban Planning) at Universiti Sains Malaysia.
Before this, she served as the Mayor of the Penang City Council and the President of the Seberang Perai Municipal Council, and she also held the position of President of the Local Authority Association of Malaysia (MALA).
Maimunah has received various national and international recognitions, including the Malaysian Urban Planner Figure Award by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government; Honorary Member of the Royal Town Planner’s Institute, United Kingdom; Honorary Fellow, United Cities of Local Government (UCLG); and Ambassador of His Majesty King Charles III (King’s Foundation) in sustainable urban development in Commonwealth countries.
She was also awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Built Environment from the International Islamic University Malaysia.
